Dynamics
Compression plug-ins for electronic music production
The question Which compressor plug-in should I use for electronic music production?
Short answer
Electronic producers use compression for three distinct jobs: controlling dynamics, gluing a bus together, and deliberate pumping via side-chain. Different compressors are designed around different jobs.
Logic users already have a multi-model compressor in Compressor. The free DC1A is a simple character compressor with almost no learning curve.
The Glue is a dedicated bus compressor modelled on the classic 1980s British console design, and FabFilter Pro-C 3 is the most flexible option, with fourteen styles, an EQ-able side chain and MIDI or tempo-synced triggering.
Three jobs, not one
In electronic music, 'compression' covers several different intentions, and the best compressor depends on which one you mean.
- Dynamic control: evening out a bassline or vocal so it sits at a consistent level. Transparency and precise attack/release matter most.
- Bus glue: gentle compression across drums or a full mix so separate elements move together. The classic tool is a console-style VCA bus compressor.
- Side-chain pumping: ducking pads or bass from the kick, either for clarity or as an audible rhythmic effect. A flexible side-chain input, filter, and ideally MIDI or tempo-synced triggering matter most.
- Character: using a compressor's saturation and behaviour as a colour, sometimes with heavy gain reduction.
The options
If you already use Logic Pro
CompressorApple
Logic's Compressor offers seven circuit types, from the clean Platinum Digital to VCA, FET and Opto models, plus a dedicated side-chain section. That covers dynamic control, bus compression and side-chain ducking without leaving the host.
Worth knowing
- It is only available inside Logic Pro and MainStage.
From the manufacturer's documentation
- Selectable circuit types: Platinum Digital, Studio VCA, Studio FET, Classic VCA, Vintage VCA, Vintage FET and Vintage Opto.
- Threshold, Ratio, Knee, Attack, Release and Auto Release controls.
- Auto Gain options of Off, 0 dB and -12 dB.
Free, fast character compression
DC1AKlanghelm
DC1A reduces compression to input and output controls, with switches for Deep (a high-pass to reduce pumping on bass-heavy material), Relaxed (peak or RMS behaviour) and Dual Mono. It is free.
It suits producers who want quick, musical gain reduction without setting attack, release and ratio by hand.
Worth knowing
- Its simplicity is also its limit: there are no attack and release controls to fine-tune. Klanghelm doesn't state minimum OS versions; see the product record.
From the manufacturer's documentation
- Two main controls: input and output.
- Deep switch engages a high-pass filter to reduce pumping on bass-heavy material.
- Relaxed switch toggles between peak and RMS behaviour.
- Dual Mono mode compresses left and right channels independently.
Dedicated bus compressor
The GlueCytomic
The Glue is modelled on the classic 1980s British large-console bus compressor, the design most associated with 'gluing' drum and mix buses. It adds a Range control to cap maximum gain change, a soft side-chain high-pass filter to stop the low end over-triggering it, and a Peak Clip option.
If bus compression is the main job you are buying for, this is the most focused tool here.
[5]From the manufacturer's documentation
- Modelled on the classic 1980s British big-console bus compressor.
- Range control that limits the maximum amount of gain change.
- Built-in soft -6 dB/octave side-chain high-pass filter.
- Peak Clip option that clips peaks after compression.
Most flexible all-rounder
FabFilter Pro-C 3FabFilter
Pro-C 3 offers fourteen compression styles, from transparent to vintage and upward compression, so it can cover every job on this page. Its side chain accepts up to six EQ bands with mid/side targeting, and it can be triggered from an external side-chain, from MIDI or from a host-tempo-synced pulse.
MIDI and tempo-synced triggering are particularly relevant to electronic music: you can create rhythmic ducking without routing a kick track at all.
Worth knowing
- It is a paid product with the most options to learn; FabFilter offers a 30-day trial.
From the manufacturer's documentation
- Fourteen compression styles in three groups. Modern: Clean, Versatile, Smooth, Punch, Upward and TTM. Classic: Op-El, Vari-Mu, Classic and Opto. Utility: Vocal, Mastering, Bus and Pumping.
- Character modes: Off, Tube, Diode and Bright.
- Side-chain EQ with up to six bands, including all-pass and brickwall shapes, with mid/side targeting.
- Triggering from external side-chain, MIDI or a host-tempo-synced pulse.
- Optional lookahead up to 20 ms.

How to choose
- Start with your host's compressor. Logic's has seven circuit types and a side chain.
- Add DC1A for quick, free character compression.
- Buy The Glue if your priority is drum and mix-bus glue.
- Buy FabFilter Pro-C 3 if you want one compressor for every job, especially side-chain work triggered by MIDI or tempo.[1][5][6]
Questions
- What is side-chain compression in electronic music?
- A compressor on one sound (often a pad or bass) is triggered by another (usually the kick), so the first sound ducks each time the trigger plays. Some compressors, including FabFilter Pro-C 3, can also be triggered by MIDI or a tempo-synced pulse instead of audio.[6]
- Is a free compressor good enough?
- For most jobs, yes. Your host's compressor and DC1A cover dynamic control and character. Paid compressors mostly add flexibility (side-chain EQ, more styles) or a specific design, such as the console bus model in The Glue.[3][5]
